Description

A young family in London prepares for the arrival of a new step‑mother, a French‑born woman whose reputation stirs suspicion among the household. Through the sharp eyes of the children—especially Vincent, a precocious boy, and his sisters Arabella and Louisa—the reader hears the subtle clash of religion, class and lingering grief for a lost mother. Lady Selina, the matriarch, tries to smooth the tension, warning that the heart can idolise the unfamiliar and turn harmless affection into hidden rivalry.

The opening scenes blend genteel domestic routine with the undercurrents of prejudice, as conversations over firelight reveal both curiosity and disdain for the newcomer’s Catholic background. Amid embroidery, whispered observations and the cold November weather, the family’s fragile equilibrium is tested, promising a story that examines how love, loyalty and the fear of the “other” shape the bonds that hold a home together.
