Description

The tale opens with Sir Roger de Rockville, a Norman‑era adventurer who claimed a rugged ridge above a sweet river and built a castle that would anchor his family for centuries. His descendants revel in the hunt, the clash of arms, and the boisterous feasts that define a bygone aristocracy, taking part in every great civil war from Stephen’s reign to the battles of the Stuarts. Their lives are a vivid collage of armor, arrows and the fierce pride of a lineage that has ever been on the front line of England’s historic conflicts.

As the centuries roll on, the Rockvilles find their martial prowess outpaced by a world that now values legislation, learning and commerce. Retiring to their county estate, they become magistrates and sheriffs, respectable yet increasingly invisible in the national story. The narrative gently watches this shift, hinting at the quiet tension between a proud, physically strong heritage and a society that now prizes the mind over the sword.
