Description

The Scottish loch glows as sunset fades, casting amber light over Sir Mark Forsyth's quiet watch at the bay window. Lady Forsyth watches their son mimic his late father's strong profile, while their terrier Bobs circles the dinner table. A small party—two young women, a Gurkha subaltern, and painter Maurice Lenox—mix jokes with the scent of unlit cigarettes. The evening feels both intimate and poised on the edge of a world about to change.

Philosophy professor Keith Macnair, a frequent visitor, offers calm contrast, his Edinburgh lectures echoing in the relaxed chatter. Lady Forsyth confides in the guests about an irresistible pull toward India, stirring dreams of service and return. Ralph hints at a furlough that might reunite him with Miss Melrose, while Maurice offers cryptic advice about future choices. All the while the quiet tension of 1914 lingers, suggesting the tranquil terrace may soon be reshaped by forces beyond their control.
