FEWER AND BETTER CHILDREN.
The book opens with a vigorous defence of the idea that humanity can, and ought to, steer its own evolution. Drawing on the scientific language of the late nineteenth century, the author gathers ideas from biology, hygiene, and social reform to argue that better marriages, cleaner environments, and informed prenatal care can shape future generations. Readers are invited to consider how the principles of natural selection might be complemented by conscious effort to nurture both mind and body.
Throughout, the author contrasts the limits of education alone with the broader influence of diet, exercise, and social conditions on a child's development. He presents a series of lectures that explore the balance between heredity and environment, using examples from animal breeding to illustrate the possibilities of what he calls “stirpiculture.” The tone remains hopeful, encouraging a thoughtful, responsible approach to the choices that affect the coming generation.
