Description

The story opens with two lively brothers, Edward and Lewis, who have just arrived in Brighton with their parents for a holiday far from London’s grey streets. From their window they watch the sea sparkle under the sun, spotting distant steam vessels that fire their imaginations. Their father, Mr. Ashton, leads them to the town’s famed Chain Pier, promising a walk where wind and waves speak directly to them. The promenade buzzes with anglers, gulls, and distant domed pavilions.

Eager to explore, the boys dash down the pier’s stairs, discovering iron towers and massive suspension chains that seem to hold the sea at bay. Their questions about how such a structure can survive storm and tide earn a patient lesson from their father about engineering ingenuity. Through vivid description and the children’s wide‑eyed wonder, the narrative captures the joyous mix of curiosity and freedom that defines a first seaside holiday. Listeners can almost feel the salty breeze and hear the distant whistle of a steam‑packet.
