Description

A wiry farmhand from the Saskatchewan fields steps into a polished armory, his overalls dust‑covered and his stature a few inches short of the official requirement. Undeterred, he spins a small lie about prior service, charms a skeptical doctor, and secures a place among the first wave of volunteers bound for Europe. His voice is wry, his humor self‑deprecating, and his resolve to join the Great War shines through the banter with sergeants and the clatter of a departing train.

The rag‑tag convoy of British expatriates, railway men, clerks and homesteaders swells with patriotic fervor as they head for Valcartier, the fledgling Canadian training camp. Amid cheers from mayoral officials and a sea of waving flags, friendships spark in cramped railway cars, promising to be tested on distant battlefields. The narrative captures the raw excitement of leaving home, the blend of adventure and duty, and the camaraderie forged before the first gunfire echoes across the Atlantic.
