Description

On a crisp autumn morning Hildegarde sets off on foot because her bicycle tire is out, turning a simple trip home into a sensory adventure. The fallen leaves crunch beneath her boots as she savors the freedom of walking, pausing to greet the saplings and take in the countryside scenery. Along the way she reads a flurry of letters—one from mischievous cousin Benny, full of spelling errors, and another from thoughtful Aunt Bond—each note pulling her deeper into the lives of friends and relatives. Through these missives, the reader gets a warm glimpse of Hildegarde’s bright, observant personality and the close‑knit community that surrounds her.

Soon a village harvest festival looms, promising dances, fresh produce, and the chance for Hildegarde to test her growing confidence among neighbors. A charming invitation to the Virginia Reel with the local colonel hints at both excitement and the gentle pressures of social expectations for a teen girl. As the harvest season unfolds, Hildegarde’s curiosity and kindness guide her through small trials, offering listeners a heartfelt portrait of youthful independence and the simple joys of rural life.
