Description

Jeremiah Kantele, a former schoolteacher, has found himself a modest life‑insurance agent in bustling early‑twentieth‑century Helsinki. Barely scraping by, he can’t afford the polished shoes and crisp suit his position seems to demand—until a sudden promotion brings a surprising five‑hundred‑mark bonus. The windfall lifts his spirits, and he steps out onto the city’s streets with a newfound swagger, eager to taste the comforts he’s long been denied.

Accompanied by his colleague Varsala, Jeremiah wanders through cafés and alleyways, swapping wry observations about the insurance trade they now serve. Their banter reveals a world where paperwork and profit mingle with uneasy ethics, hinting at the compromises Jeremiah must weigh as he climbs the corporate ladder. The novel follows his tentative steps toward respectability, offering a sharp, humorous glimpse into ambition, class, and the quiet desperation of a man trying to rewrite his own story.
