In a noisy Los Angeles railway office at the turn of the twentieth century, John spends his days hunched over a typewriter, his clumsy movements drawing both amusement and pity from his colleagues. The office is a circus of bustling clerks, olive packers, oil‑well owners, and an over‑confident orange shipper, all watching as John’s awkward attempts at drama turn the workroom into a makeshift stage. Amid the paper storms and the steady hum of telephones, his coworkers whisper about his long‑standing mediocrity, treating his missteps like a vaudeville act.
Outside the grimy window, the spire of the First Church and the snow‑capped Sierra Madre mountains remind John of a larger world beyond his cramped desk. Encouraged by Bessie’s steadfast belief that he should “follow your star,” he begins to entertain the possibility of a different life—perhaps one that finally lets him step out of the shadows of the office and into the spotlight he’s always imagined.
