Chapter VII THE COALVILLE NEWS, Vol. I, No. 1
Harry is a freshly orphaned eighteen‑year‑old with a head full of ideas and a pocket full of debt. After a stint caring for an invalid uncle in a bustling printing shop, he’s learned the craft of setting type, making up forms, and running a press. Faced with a town that won’t hire him and a future that looks bleak, he hatches a plan that could turn his misfortune into a venture of his own.
Pooling a modest loan from his school‑teacher sister, Harry travels to Denver to acquire a compact printing outfit on credit, then heads for the coal‑mining community of Coalville. He imagines a lively paper that will give the townsfolk news, opinion, and a voice of its own. As the first sheets dry on the press, the story follows his resourceful hustle, the challenges of a fledgling business, and the promise of a young publisher making his mark.
