Description

On the frosty morning of Russia’s January 6th, the streets of St. Petersburg buzz with parades and the crack of cannons as the city celebrates a grand holiday. Inside a warm townhouse, brother and sister Ivan and Olga stare listlessly from a snow‑covered window, chafing under the strict watch of their English governess who has barred them from the festive outside. Their restless imagination longs for the rushing ice‑hill beyond the palace.

Against their better judgment, the twins slip into their fur cloaks and, with a pocketful of kopeks, hire a snowy‑driven sled to race down the frozen riverbank. The thrill of twenty miles per hour carries them past bustling troikas and into a bustling pleasure‑garden pavilion, where a hot tea from a brass samovar steams in the wind. A sudden swerve sends them tumbling onto the ice, but the quick‑acting attendants lift them to safety, leaving the children shivering, humbled, and newly aware of the costs of reckless adventure.
