Description

Frank has spent months dreaming of the open sea, and when he finally steps aboard a sleek Mediterranean steamer his imagination runs wild. The warm, sun‑splashed waters and endless horizon fill him with the promise of adventure, while seasoned sailors share salty tales of the strait’s hidden dangers. As the ship glides through glass‑like water, Frank’s excitement is palpable, his eyes taking in the dazzling sunset that blurs sky and sea into one bright dome. Yet the old boatswain’s warning about “white squalls” lingers like a distant foreboding chant.

When a pale, phosphorescent mist rolls in, the calm shatters into chaos. A sudden, deafening roar lifts the vessel onto its beam‑ends, sending men scrambling for their posts as waves crash and timbers splinter. Frank is thrust into the maelstrom, barely saved by a quick‑thinking sailor who drags him back onto the deck. The experience thrusts the youngster into a harsh lesson about the sea’s power, leaving him trembling but eager to learn more.
