Description

Set in a quiet New England town that still clings to its colonial roots, the tale opens on a crisp October evening when rain‑softened fields give way to a sudden chill. We meet Obed, a bound apprentice accustomed to hard labor, and English Eliza, a recent arrival from England who has been taken in by the Miller family. As the farmworkers gather around a crackling hearth, they trade old war legends and ghost stories that have haunted the region for generations.

Eliza’s sharp, fearless logic stands against the whispered superstitions, as she declares she would not tremble even in a midnight graveyard. Her resolve both comforts and unnerves Obed, whose own imagination is already stirred by the eerie tales. The story weaves together the rhythms of rural life, the tension between rational thought and folk belief, and the quiet courage that arises when fear gathers around the fire.
