Ruth Babcock has always been known for her kind heart and stubborn grit. When her father, the town’s bank president, is crippled in a wreck and loses his memory, a shady deal leaves the family nearly penniless and forces Ruth to confront a harsh new reality. Determined to keep her father and ailing aunt afloat, she sells the family home and heads for the larger town of Wilford Springs.

In Wilford Springs Ruth enrolls in a business college, taking a stenography course as a practical way to earn a living. The move tests her resolve as she balances studies, a modest rented room, and the lingering shadow of the bank’s mysterious new controller. Along the way she meets a cast of characters whose loyalties and secrets hint at larger forces tugging at the community’s conscience.
