In the mist‑shrouded heart of a bog, a solitary ice queen named Hallatar keeps watch from her frozen cavern, her days lit by dancing will‑o‑the‑wisps. Proud and aloof, she rules the chill with a cold certainty, daring any intruder to step into her realm. When the night deepens, the swamp’s quiet is broken by a child’s bright song that drifts across the water, stirring Hallatar’s restless pride.
Beyond the mire lives a humble shepherd girl, tending her flock in a sunny meadow far from the queen’s icy grip. She shares simple joys and worries with an old brownie who guards her barn, swapping stories of berries, beasts, and the forest’s hidden paths. Their friendship is gentle and unassuming, a stark contrast to Hallatar’s looming power.
When Hallatar learns of the shepherd’s carefree song, she vows to make the girl feel the weight of her authority. The tension between the cold sovereign and the warm‑hearted girl sets the stage for a tale of curiosity, bravery, and the fragile balance between two very different worlds.

Known today mainly through the Finnish collection Hallatar ja paimentyttö: ja muita satuja, this author remains intriguingly hard to pin down in modern sources. That air of mystery gives the work an old-storybook charm all its own.
