In the quiet town of Hämeenlinna, the Hakala household is a modest home bustling with daily chores and quiet hopes. While the patriarch is away on a business trip, his wife Helena and their neighbor Anna fill the kitchen with coffee and conversation, trying to keep the family afloat after a swindling loan officer left a crushing debt. The scene is set around a simple wooden table, where the women weigh promises against necessities and wonder when the money will finally arrive.
Against this backdrop, their daughter Liinu and the other neighbors weave their own stories of work, study and whispered ambitions. The play captures the rhythm of early‑twentieth‑century Finnish life—children’s laughter, the sound of a sewing needle, and the lingering fear that a careless promise could ruin a household. As the women share news, plan repairs, and await the return of the distant husband, the audience feels the tension between communal support and the weight of individual burdens.
