Set against the waning days of the Ming dynasty, the story opens with a lyrical meditation on dreams, lotus flowers and the thin line between illusion and reality. A humble couple from a small Shandong village, known for their honesty and extreme thrift, pray to the mountain gods for a child, hoping that a simple offering might sway fate. Their devotion is rewarded with a vivid night vision of a golden‑armored deity handing them a fragrant lotus, a symbol that will come to haunt their choices.
When the dream seems to bloom into reality, the couple is blessed with a daughter, yet the blessings are fleeting as drought and famine strike the land. Stripped of wealth and shelter, the orphaned child wanders until she encounters a wandering monk who offers a path of refuge on the sacred slopes of Mount Tai. As she steps onto the pilgrimage route, the tale unfolds into a journey that intertwines personal survival with deeper questions about generosity, destiny, and the elusive nature of true awakening.

Known by the pen name Su'anzhuren, this Qing-era writer is remembered for Chinese vernacular fiction that survived through later printings and modern digital editions. Very little seems to be known about the person behind the name, which makes the works themselves the clearest window into the author.
