In a modest Shaanxi village where only the Zhao and Fang lineages reside, the rush for prestige begins with a humble school. The Fang clan, eager to keep pace, hires the retired scholar Wang Ren to teach their children the art of the imperial examinations, and soon a bright youngster named Fang Bikai impresses everyone with his essays. Meanwhile, the Zhao family celebrates when their grandson, Zhao Wen, secures a coveted juren rank, sparking a wave of excitement and rivalry that ripples through the community.
The news fuels the Fangs’ determination to secure futures through official posts, prompting lavish preparations and strategic marriages. Wang Ren, however, delivers a blunt lesson about the true costs of ambition, confronting Fang Bikai’s impatient desire for status with sharp criticism. As the villagers scramble to honor the new scholar and negotiate their own hopes, the story captures the tangled mix of hope, vanity, and the relentless grind of the examination system.
