Description

In a dimly lit hall the electric lights flicker on, revealing an eclectic mix of scholars, artists, and aristocrats gathering for a curious soirée. Architect Kurt Borg welcomes painter Sellén, who returns after fifteen years of philosophizing in the “Red Room.” Their banter drifts between nostalgic recollections of old acquaintances and uneasy references to recent murders, setting a tone of both camaraderie and concealed tension.

As the night progresses, the doors open to admit a parade of guests—professors bearing honors, a flamboyant Norwegian painter named Lage Lang, and a host of academicians whose solemn silhouettes dominate the room. Their conversations weave together art, politics, and the lingering frictions between Sweden and Norway, hinting at hidden agendas beneath the polished surface. Listeners are drawn into a world where old friendships clash with fresh ambitions, and every toast may carry a whisper of intrigue.

August Strindberg

1849–1912

A fierce, inventive writer who helped reshape modern drama, he moved from sharp naturalistic plays to dreamlike, psychologically daring work. His books and plays often drew straight from his own turbulent life, which gave them unusual intensity.
