Description

A wandering narrator recounts three distinct periods of his life, linked by a lively friendship with the Portuguese Viscount Goivo‑Formoso. Their correspondence crackles with opposing views—one a staunch believer in free will, the other a determined determinist—yet the debates only deepen their bond. The storyteller promises to share, rather than moralise, the curious incidents that have sparked their endless arguments.

Set against the vivid backdrop of 19th‑century Rio de Janeiro, the narrative paints the city’s lush bays, fragrant orange groves, and swarming insects with a painter’s eye. Within this exotic tableau, a mysterious woman becomes the focal point of the viscount’s experiment to prove his philosophical thesis. As the narrator weaves these episodes together, he aims simply to amuse and intrigue, offering listeners a blend of travel, philosophy, and human folly without revealing what lies beyond the opening act.
