A weary soldier named Per Vinter returns to civilian life with barely three shillings to his name, yet his good humor carries him through the streets of Copenhagen. When he wanders into a forest, an enigmatic old man appears, asking for a single coin each time the two meet. In exchange, the stranger bestows a grey goose, an old sword, a sturdy shirt and a cryptic piece of advice, promising a reward that matches Per’s generosity.
Armed with these curious gifts, Per is urged to travel to England, where a looming war between the English king and a Turkish prince threatens the kingdom. He presents himself as a fresh recruit in the Danish king’s service, hoping the magical items will guide him through the foreign battlefield. The tale blends humor, folklore charm, and a hint of adventure, inviting listeners to follow Per’s oddly generous exchange and his unexpected plunge into a distant conflict.

A tireless collector of Denmark’s oral tradition, he spent years traveling through Jutland to record songs, tales, legends, and everyday folklore directly from rural storytellers. His work preserved voices and customs that might otherwise have disappeared.
