Description

On the transatlantic steamer Scorpio, a self‑made gentleman named Geff sails toward Liverpool, blissfully unaware that his presumed‑dead wife and their infant are hidden among the passengers. His rise from a penniless adventurer to a wealthy proprietor has left him haunted by vivid nightmares—a dark forest and a wounded girl on a silent street—suggesting that his fortune may be built on sins he cannot escape. As he drinks and gambles to drown the guilt, Geff clings to the belief that wealth could have turned him into a benefactor for the world.

Beside him sits Lamia, a striking yet calculating bride whose affection masks a cold bargain for rank and riches. Their marriage is a fragile performance of devotion, each concealing true motives while navigating the precarious balance of love, ambition, and survival. When the ship’s decks suddenly reveal the presence of Geff’s forgotten family, the fragile veneer of their lives threatens to crumble, forcing all three to confront the price of their choices.

1819–1899

One of the most widely read American novelists of the 19th century, she turned to fiction after her husband left the family and built a huge audience with dramatic, fast-moving stories. Her best-known work, The Hidden Hand, helped make her famous for spirited heroines who pushed against the limits of their time.
