Description

Set in a quiet valley of southwestern England, the novel opens on an ancient, narrow road that winds past crumbling oaks and a weathered gate leading into a forgotten glen. A remarkable child, keen and observant, begins to navigate a world where cider making and perry farms shape daily life. The author seeks to render a piece of nature itself, letting the landscape and its modest inhabitants speak with unvarnished truth.

The narrative is split into two interlaced parts, the earlier one laying the groundwork for events that echo later in the lives of the same family. As the child matures, the story follows his gradual transformation into an ordinary man, exploring how chance and circumstance steer him toward the freedom suggested by the title. Listeners are invited to ponder how much of our destiny is pre‑ordained and how much we shape ourselves.
