Commander Gray sits in the austere command office of the starship Polaris, a man whose reputation for inflexibility is matched only by the weight of his authority. When a frantic transmission warns of a malevolent death‑craft stalking a civilian liner, the commissioner’s fear forces Gray into a reluctant but decisive action. He must contact Interstellar Command on Sirius VII and learn the intentions of the mysterious Beolin fleet, whose commander, Krraula, radiates a chilling, alien menace.
The only person who seems to understand the delicate balance of power out here is Gray’s aide, Kina Staun, a half‑Solarian with a loyalty that borders on the obsessive. Together they parse the strategic puzzle: how to use Gray’s command authority to avert disaster without provoking a full‑scale confrontation. As the liner drifts toward the edge of hostile space, the tension between human protocol and alien intent sets the stage for a high‑stakes diplomatic standoff.
