Description

A rugged mountain girl named Barbro arrives in the bustling city, leaving behind the wide‑open heath of Heimdalvuori for cramped, noisy quarters near a rag‑filled tavern. She quickly discovers that city life is far harsher than the quiet slopes she knew, with drunken patrons, crowded markets, and an endless demand for labor that tests her resolve. Yet her strong, honest nature draws the attention of those who see her as a possible solution to a pressing need: a reliable wet‑nurse for the town’s few newborns.

As Barbro is thrust into the role of a caregiver, she must navigate the expectations of society’s elite doctors and the uneasy clash between her simple, earthy upbringing and the sophisticated, often cold urban world. The novel explores how a young woman from the mountains can become both indispensable and vulnerable, revealing the hidden pressures of class, gender, and duty in a rapidly changing community. Listeners will be drawn into Barbro’s struggle to find purpose and dignity amid an environment that both rewards and exploits her newfound status.
