A fierce autumn storm in 1807 leaves the three‑mast vessel “Future” broken and adrift along the frozen coast of the north. When the mastless hull finally runs aground, only a handful of crew remain, among them the ship’s steward, his desperate wife, and their infant child, clinging to life on the icy deck. As the wind dies down, a lone fisherman from the nearby island discovers the wreck and the faint signs of a woman’s struggle, pulling the survivors into an uneasy encounter with the harsh Arctic wilderness.
The narrative follows the fragile attempts to salvage what they can while confronting an unforgiving environment. The characters grapple with fear, exhaustion, and the haunting presence of a mysterious, ragged figure who seems to linger near the wreckage. Their efforts to repair the ship and secure the child’s safety are compounded by the stark beauty and relentless cold of the northern seas.
Through vivid description and intimate moments, the story captures the tension between hope and despair, portraying how ordinary people respond when nature’s fury threatens to erase them completely.

A central voice in 19th-century Norwegian literature, this storyteller brought coastal life, family tensions, and the feel of everyday Norway vividly onto the page. His novels helped shape the Scandinavian realist tradition and still stand beside the work of his famous contemporaries.
