MESÉK ÉS MONDÁK.
In the early 1870s a group of volunteers, supported by the Kisfaludy Society, began gathering oral traditions from Hungary and Transylvania. They solicited ballads, riddles, lullabies and tales that had only survived in newspapers or private notes. This first volume records those contributions in a single collection.
Poet László Arany edited the myths and narratives, while Gyulai Pál handled mysteries, ballads and songs, adding brief notes for context. They kept regional flavor by preserving occasional dialect signs rather than forcing a uniform spelling. The result is a readable yet authentic snapshot of local speech.
Listening feels like entering a village hearth where a farmer’s lament or a shepherd’s love song echoes in vivid rhythm. The pieces reveal everyday hopes, fears and humor of 19th‑century rural life, making the past tangible for modern ears. Folklore fans and curious listeners alike will hear Hungary’s old heart beat.
