In the leafy outskirts of early‑twentieth‑century Budapest a modest yet elegant stone house stands, its garden a tapestry of blossoming trees, rose‑laden paths and summer picnics. From the bright terraces one can hear piano music and see couples dancing beneath white shutters, while winter coats the roof in soft snow and the chimneys sigh with warm smoke. The atmosphere is one of sincere hospitality, a place where laughter and quiet moments blend as effortlessly as the changing seasons.
The story begins when a lanky young man in a long coat, known only as Szakáll, arrives at the gate, his eyes searching for a familiar face among the garden’s caretakers. He is greeted by the house’s gardener and by Hortense, a bright‑eyed daughter who recalls childhood games in the nearby woods. Their tentative reunion hints at old friendships, hidden motives, and the promise of lively gatherings that will test the bonds of this seemingly friendly home.
