DRIFTING
Illustrated From Designs By Miss L. B. Humphrey
DRIFTING.
The verses open with a wandering spirit that drifts across the mist‑covered waters of Vesuvian Bay, its tiny winged boat gliding among purple peaks and crystal‑clear inlets. Light dances on the sea’s surface, reflecting a duplicated golden glow that hints at a world where earth, air, and water move in quiet harmony. As the poet describes volcanic mists and ancient olive groves, the landscape becomes a dreamscape, inviting listeners to breathe in the scent of pine and the distant song of Tasso.
A gentle, almost hypnotic rhythm guides the listener through sensations of floating clouds, sun‑warmed decks, and the soft murmur of waves against a carefree sail. The narrative pauses on a fisher’s child with wild hair, whose bright laughter and curious gaze capture the simple joys of seaside life. Throughout, the work balances serene contemplation with a subtle yearning for a paradise that feels both near and forever out of reach.
