In the warm August light of St. Bartholomew’s Day, 1483, the towering Hohkönigsburg dominates the Wasgau landscape, its crimson‑gold banner fluttering from the highest tower. The fortress, a massive stone cone rising from a narrow ridge, is surrounded by twin walls bristling with round towers and guarded by armored sentries who salute every visitor with gleaming halberds. Inside, a spacious courtyard houses stables, workshops and a forge, while a steep, stair‑lined passage leads to the lofty “Lion Gate,” where a herald in a richly embroidered coat awaits newcomers.
The castle, recently rebuilt after a devastating siege, prepares to host a grand festival to mark its rebirth. Knights from the surrounding regions have been summoned, their banners promising both celebration and the rekindling of old rivalries. As the feudal lords gather, the atmosphere swells with anticipation, hinting at the tangled loyalties and disputes that will soon surface beneath the revelry.
