Description

When young Roy begs his Uncle Henry to join the maple sugar camp, he imagines the excitement of climbing big trees and hauling sap. Uncle Henry warns that the work is tough, with aching backs and cold nights, but encourages Roy to prove his growing strength. Together they trek up the mountain, tap trees, and haul heavy yokes of pails, turning sweet sap into boiling syrup. Through the hard labor and frosty mornings, Roy discovers that true fun comes from meeting a challenge head‑on.

In a nearby town, Bobby spends a snowy afternoon carving an enormous snowman, only to have neighbor Joey toss stones and knock off its head. The rivalry escalates, but Bobby’s mother reminds him that quarrels can melt away like snow, urging patience and goodwill. As the children regroup, a sudden accident threatens Joey’s sister Sadie, who slips from a roof and falls toward danger. The towering snow figure, newly repaired, stands as an unexpected guardian in the moment of crisis.
