In a lively 19th‑century Slovenian village, the story opens inside a bustling tavern where locals and travelers converge over wine and gossip. The innkeeper Peharček, a rugged man with a weathered demeanor, is drawn into a sudden encounter with a young, handsome doctor named Vencelj, who has arrived with mysterious cargo and a promise to transport a stranger on horseback. Their exchange, laced with humor and rustic proverbs, quickly establishes a world of vivid characters—boisterous patrons, a sharp‑tongued tailor, and curious newcomers—each revealing the customs and concerns of their time.
As the unexpected visitor seeks a ride to the distant Slemenice, Peharček wrestles with his own limitations, offering hospitality while hinting at deeper obligations and superstitions that govern village life. The narrative balances spirited dialogue with a palpable sense of place, inviting listeners to step into a slice of rural history where hospitality, fate, and a touch of irony intertwine.
