Description

A gifted child from Tonnerre, the future Chevalier dazzled early patrons with a keen mind and restless ambition. By his twenties he had slipped into the shadowy corridors of Louis XV’s secret diplomacy, serving as aide to the king’s envoys in Russia and later joining the army as Marshal de Broglie’s trusted aide‑de‑camp during the Seven Years’ War. His skill for negotiation earned him a rare appointment as interim French minister in London, where he soon found himself embroiled in bitter disputes with rival diplomats and entangled in a high‑profile murder accusation.

Back in France the Chevalier faced a sudden reversal of fortune, his secret papers compromised and his reputation besieged. Forced to rely on a modest pension, he began a daring experiment: presenting himself as a woman to secure financial stability and continue his covert work for the crown. This bold reversal drew scandal, fascination, and a fresh wave of intrigue that would shape his later years in both Parisian salons and London’s bustling streets.
