Fresh from his rigorous exams at the royal academy in Copenhagen, the young scholar embarks for Norway with only a modest stipend and a fierce curiosity about the natural world. After a six‑day voyage he arrives in Bergen, welcomed by fellow students but driven beyond their modest ambitions. He soon turns to a vast, wind‑howling cavern high on a rugged mountain, a place spoken of in hushed tones for its strange, breathing opening.
Compelled by scientific ambition and urged on by mentors like Abelinus, he begins the perilous descent into the abyss, ignoring warnings that the wind seems to inhale and exhale like a living creature. The cavern’s shifting lights and eerie gusts stir lively debate among the learned, who suspect it may reveal hidden principles of nature. As he ventures deeper, the narrative hints at a wider quest that could carry him beyond familiar lands toward distant continents and even the very firmament.
