Description

In the turbulent aftermath of Multatuli’s groundbreaking pamphlets, a new kind of story emerges—one that blends sharp social critique with the wonder of a child’s imagination. The narrator presents the “history of Woutertje Pieterse” not as a lofty fantasy, but as a vivid portrait of a young poet‑soul struggling to find goodness, truth and beauty in a world dominated by petty self‑interest and rigid conventions.

Wouter grows up in a cramped, middle‑class neighbourhood where moral codes feel as confining as the narrow rooms he inhabits. Yet his mind constantly drifts beyond the familiar streets, seeking refuge in castles, windmills and the romantic books that ignite his heart. Early episodes—such as his secret pepper‑trade with mischievous neighbours and his tentative steps into a modest office—show both his playful curiosity and the subtle pressures that seek to shape him.

Best known for Max Havelaar, this fiercely original Dutch writer turned his own colonial experience into a powerful attack on injustice. His work helped make literature a place for moral outrage, irony, and bold social criticism.
