Description

The story opens on a scorching June day in 1793, when two gilded carriages roar through the Villette gate, drawing the eyes of every watchful guard. A lone figure in black, oddly dressed in short breeches and a crisp white cravat, steps out with an air of authority that both unsettles and intrigues the onlookers. He is M. de Paris, a man tasked by the revolutionary Commune to escort a newly forged guillotine to Châlons, a symbol of the terror that now drives the nation’s politics.

Accompanying him is the young sergeant Léon Milcent, who is really Jacques Mérey, a veteran of the 1792 campaigns summoned once more to the front. Together they rally a ragtag band of volunteers, promising them a place on the march toward Sarrelouis as the threat of a second invasion looms. Amid the clatter of boots and whispered conspiracies, a stranger’s quiet promise hints at a deeper, personal quest that will soon intertwine with the fate of a mysterious marquis’s daughter.
