Description

In a bustling October afternoon on the Boulevard des Italiens, a wiry old man draws the curious gazes of passers‑by. Dressed in a nostalgic spencer and a battered hat from a bygone Empire era, he looks as if he has stepped out of a history book, his smug smile hinting at a secret triumph. The street’s spectators, ever‑watchful, read his strange attire as a living relic, a reminder of fashions long past, and they wonder what strange business has brought him back to the city’s modern pulse.

Beyond the flamboyant exterior, the elderly figure is a devoted collector of rare objects, his modest apartment a treasure‑trove of curiosities that he guards with almost religious fervor. When distant relatives arrive, drawn by the promise of inheritance, the gentle routine of his life is threatened, setting off a quiet clash of affection, greed, and the fragile dignity of an aging man who has built his identity around the things he cherishes.

About the author

Honoré de Balzac

Honoré de Balzac

1799–1850

A giant of French fiction, this restless, ambitious storyteller built a whole literary world in La Comédie humaine, capturing the dreams, vanities, and struggles of 19th-century society. His novels still feel lively because they care so much about money, power, love, and the ways people reinvent themselves.
