Consuelo moves through a shadowed forest, feeling the weight of Wenceslawa's gaze for the first time. Determined to reach the remote Schloss Schreckenstein, she hopes to confront Zdenko and learn whether he will guide her to the enigmatic Count Albert. Their encounter is marked by a clumsy mix of German, Romani and half‑understood phrases, as Consuelo offers to learn his language in exchange for a song.
In a tense dialogue the two trade verses, each trying to prove their loyalty while the atmosphere crackles with mistrust. Zdenko’s sudden anger erupts, his hands clutching a heavy stone as he threatens the frightened Consuelo, who flees down the path. At the foot of the trail she meets a simple farmer who, with a calm smile, tries to reassure her that the wild‑hearted Zdenko is not truly cruel, leaving her to wonder what further perils lie ahead.
