Edward Longshanks comes to power in 1272, a seasoned warrior of roughly thirty‑five who must quickly assert his authority after his father's death. The opening pages follow his swift coronation in London and his immediate departure to the continent, where he navigates the courts of Sicily, Rome and Burgundy, forging alliances and confronting rivals such as the excommunicated Guy de Montfort. Amid tournaments and diplomatic rituals, the new king also begins the delicate dance of homage to his French cousin, Philip III, while asserting England's claims on French soil.
Back in England, Edward faces the restless nobility of the north and the unsettled borders with Scotland. He issues charters, organizes royal officials, and dispatches agents to the papal curia to secure financial support, all while quelling local rebellions in Gascony. These early moves lay the groundwork for the vigorous, sometimes contentious, reign that will shape the kingdoms of England, Scotland and Ireland.
