Mid‑century England is at a crossroads when the young Henry, second son of Geoffrey Plantagenet, steps ashore at Portsmouth and makes his way to Winchester before being crowned at Westminster. The ceremony draws the great archbishops, earls, and barons of the realm, and the new monarch, barely twenty‑three, seeks to win the loyalty of a kingdom still bruised by civil war.
In his first months Henry sets an ambitious agenda: he summons the most learned counselors, reinstates the legal traditions of his grandfather, and appoints Thomas Becket as chancellor. At the same time, he issues a bold proclamation ordering foreign adventurers—especially the numerous Flemish settlers—to leave, reclaiming lands that had been granted during the turmoil. These moves spark both hope and resentment among nobles, who watch carefully as the king begins to reshape the crown’s power and restore order.

Best known for helping compile one of the great histories of Tudor England, this 16th-century chronicler left behind a book that later writers, including Shakespeare, eagerly mined for stories. His work helped shape how generations imagined the histories of England, Scotland, and Ireland.
