Description

On a rugged island in San Francisco Bay, two daring siblings—Lesley, eleven, and Ronald, eight—turn every stone and tide‑pounded cliff into a playground of imagination. Their secret tongue, lively jokes, and endless games give life to a tiny world populated by a cheeky pet crow, a melodious donkey named Jenny Lind, and a handful of hopping chickens and rabbits. With a lighthouse looming above and a narrow rail line that only the donkey can master, the children’s days are a mixture of daring climbs, makeshift gardens, and the simple joy of inventing stories together.

Beyond the rocky shoreline, the island holds a quiet network of sea‑birds, kelp gardens, and hidden tide pools that whisper of mysteries waiting to be uncovered. As their father and the seasoned sailor Stumpy go about maintaining the lighthouse, Lesley and Ronald’s boundless energy hints at an adventure that will test their cleverness and deepen the bonds with their whimsical companions. The story celebrates youthful curiosity and the magic that can be found when a pair of brave hearts explore the world right outside their doorstep.

A lively voice in early children's literature, she helped bring classic tales, poems, and story collections to young readers with warmth and a teacher's eye. Her work with sister Kate Douglas Wiggin also grew out of the early kindergarten movement that shaped both of their careers.
