Set on the moon‑lit ruins of an ancient temple on the island of Leucadia, this play opens with Antonio, son of the powerful Duke Charles Di Tocca, awaiting a mysterious visitor. Soon Fulvia arrives, bearing news of a looming papal envoy and unsettling rumors that the duke’s rule may be under threat. The uneasy atmosphere is heightened by whispered prophecies from a deranged monk, suggesting that love and power are already on a collision course.
Antonio’s sister Helena bursts in, trembling with fear after a chilling encounter with the monk Agabus, who claims to have seen the “shadow” of future tragedy. As loyalties shift and old grievances surface, the duke’s court becomes a tangled web of ambition, forbidden love, and superstition. The stage is set for a looming catastrophe that will test each character’s resolve and reveal the true cost of power.
