In a candle‑lit loggia overlooking Avignon’s spired church and cloisters, the young poet Francesco Petrarca wrestles with a restless heart. His brother Gherardo, a disciplined monk, urges restraint while Petrarca’s yearning for the elusive Laura ignites a clash between sacred duty and sensual longing. Around them gather friends, a loyal servant, and the vivacious women of the city, whose laughter and wine promise a night of fleeting pleasure.
The scene crackles with witty repartee and poetic frustration as Petrarca vows to break free from his self‑imposed chastity. Yet his vows are tested by the seductive presence of Sancia and the ever‑present tension between the monk’s counsel and the poet’s desire for artistic and mortal indulgence. Listeners will be drawn into the charged atmosphere of medieval Avignon, feeling the tug of love, ambition, and the timeless battle between restraint and desire.
