Set against the glittering backdrop of 1570 Naples, the story opens on a sun‑kissed terrace overlooking the Bay of Capri, Vesuvius, and fragrant orange groves. The house belongs to Rizzio, a young leader of the city’s literary circle, whose wedding to Porzia is surrounded by music, revelry, and statues of both the Virgin and the pagan god Pan. In this lush, almost theatrical landscape, the air is thick with the scent of blossoming myrtle and the restless hum of a society perched between indulgent excess and looming restraint.
On the very day of the nuptials, Rizzio’s brother Osio bursts in, brandishing a fierce opposition to the heretical ideas circulating among his kin. Joined by a bold Dominican, a skeptical physician, and the shadow of the Inquisition, they spar over ancient philosophy, the authority of the Church, and the tantalizing promise of new knowledge. Their heated debate sets the stage for a clash of passions, where love, belief, and intellectual freedom teeter on the edge of danger.
