Description

The story opens on the bustling banks of the Bonny River in 1886, where the scent of palm‑oil mingles with the clatter of war‑canoes. Two powerful chiefs, Will Braid and Yellow, have risen against King Amachree, threatening to cripple the lucrative trade that sustains both African and European interests. As rumors of open rebellion ripple through the mangrove‑lined waters, the British consul and a handful of colonial officials are called in to restore order.

A tense palaver is convened on the deck of the hulking steamship Adriatic, its quarter‑deck strewn with Union‑Jack banners and a motley assembly of chiefs, merchants, and officers. Dressed in flamboyant waistcoats and towering hats, the African leaders shoulder glittering coral beads and ivory bangles while the consul, painted in war‑like colors, presides over the negotiations. The scene is a vivid tableau of culture clash, ambition, and the uneasy balance of power that will shape the river’s future.
