Description

Captain Scraggs is a hard‑bitten steamboat owner who has spent too many years criss‑crossing the fog‑choked waterways of the Sacramento and San Joaquin marshes. When the Maggie slips into a thick tule fog off Pilar Point, he and his outspoken mate, Mr. Gibney, trade barbs and stubborn pride instead of steering a safe course home. Their quarrel over who should turn back and who should press on sets the stage for a clash of personalities that feels as turbulent as the mist itself.

Against a backdrop of creaking decks, salty air, and the looming threat of a night lost to the fog, the crew’s bruised egos and desperate need for cash push them toward a reckless decision. As the mist thickens, Scraggs’ vague promises of “tearing the ship apart” hint at a turning point where ordinary sailors might be forced into the realm of outlaws. The opening pages tease both the danger of the waters and the wild, uncharted path that lies ahead for this unlikely band of nautical misfits.
