Description

In a quiet corner of the Orne department, the narrator is born on an October evening in the tiny village of Saint‑Michel‑les‑Hêtres. The opening paints the surrounding beech forest, the glimmering Huisne River, and the crumbling priory that shadows his modest family home, while early tragedies—an orphaned playmate and a fever‑stricken uncle—loom over his childhood. Through vivid details of windmills, tanneries, and overgrown gardens, we feel the mix of innocent mischief and the weight of rural life.

Years later the village reshapes itself: the old church is rebuilt with flamboyant stonework, new cottages replace weathered walls, and the landscape seems to shift like a living painting. Yet the adult narrator clings to the precise textures of his youth—iron gates, towering chestnut trunks, the muted caw of crows over the fields—and uses them to explore how memory both preserves and reshapes what was lost. Listeners are invited to linger in this lyrical meditation, a portrait of a life half lived in the present and half forever rooted in the past.
