After the town’s busiest fair, Caer Madoc’s High Street lies strewn with orange‑peel and paper, the sea breeze stirring the lingering cheer into quiet. Caradoc Wynne—known as Cardo—leaves the Red Dragon stable, his dark hair and bright eyes carrying him home through the moorland that frames the sleepy Welsh settlement.
He entrusts his horse to the farrier Roberts and the stable‑hand Deio, promising a night’s rest before the animal heads to Abersethin. Beneath Cardo’s easy smile lies a subtle strain with his father, the dutiful Vicare, whose stern reputation shadows the family’s long‑standing place in town, while the distant drums of the local militia echo in the background.
