Description

The story opens on a summer afternoon at the climax of an intercollegiate track meet, where the top runners from eastern colleges line up for a fifteen‑mile marathon. The crowd of ten thousand roars as the starter's pistol cracks, and the athletes surge from the blocks like a herd of greyhounds. As the miles pass, the field thins and the race becomes a battle of stamina, strategy, and raw will. The narrative captures the frantic energy of the stands, the colorful chants, and the pressure tightening around each runner.

Among the dwindling pack, a tall, finely built student named Bert Wilson bides his time, his stride steady. When the final mile arrives, he unleashes a sudden burst of speed that turns his jog into a dazzling sprint, overtaking the leaders in a heartbeat. The stadium erupts as he flies past the tape, setting a new record and becoming a legend for his college. Teammates hoist him aloft, while his dry humor hints at the confidence and humility that will shape the rest of his journey.
