Part of the excavation had been made by hydraulic action. Where the ground was soft, tremendous streams of water played upon the banks, washing the dirt away. In other sections, there were enormous steam shovels, some of them weighing ninety-five tons, and scooping up the earth, a carload at a time.

Description

Three inseparable friends—Bert, Dick and Tom—share more than a friendship; they’re a tightly‑knit trio of young American engineers, bound by daring exploits and a love of adventure. While a battered train winds through a war‑scarred Mexico, they find themselves caught in a sudden hold‑up, the echo of revolting guns and desperate bandits turning a routine journey into a pulse‑quickening test of nerves. The landscape outside the windows is a ruined countryside, and the men’s resolve is sharpened by the harsh reality of a nation torn apart by rival factions and marauding gangs.

Their destination, however, is far more hopeful: the grand opening of the Panama Canal. Fueled by fascination with the engineering marvel that promises to reshape world trade, the friends set out to witness the canal’s first ships pass through, eager to trade the danger of Mexico’s deserts for the triumph of human ingenuity. The opening chapters blend high‑stakes peril with the promise of an unforgettable odyssey across Central America.
